Mission

The WHRD Initiative is a Pan-African, women-defender-led protection and care meshwork dedicated to safeguarding women human rights defenders (WHRDs) in Africa and beyond. It envisions a future where every WHRD can fulfil their mandate unimpeded by barriers that seek to silence them. It aims to provide robust protective measures for at-risk WHRDs, enhance visibility and recognition of their contributions, strengthen their skills and capacities, maintain solidarity networks for collective action and promote self-sufficiency.

The WHRD Initiative's motivation for providing fiscal hosting services stems from its commitment to enabling WHRDs by alleviating financial and administrative burdens that hinder their vital work. Its objectives are to ensure WHRDs and their movements have access to essential resources, facilitate compliance with donor regulations and provide transparent financial management. It aims to enhance the sustainability and impact of emerging WHRD networks and individuals, strengthen their financial literacy and organisational capacities and ultimately enable them to independently manage their funds, fostering self-sufficiency and resilience in their advocacy efforts.

Alliance of Feminist Movements

Organisations must be led by active women defenders and feminist activists, focus on women's human rights advocacy, demonstrate a commitment to feminist and intersectional principles, and operate in Africa. It supports individual WHRDs and WHRD networks with a proven track record of advancing human rights and at-risk WHRDs. Organisations engaged in activities that contradict human rights principles or those without a clear focus on the safety, recognition and advocacy of WHRDs are not eligible.
